What is BHT?

In Norway, the term BHT (Bedriftshelsetjeneste) – occupational health service – is well known. However, many people still have questions: What is it, and do I need it? BHT is an external expert and adviser to your business on matters relating to the prevention of occupational health and safety and the working environment.

It is important to understand: BHT is not an ambulance service or a healthcare facility. Its aim is – to identify the potential risks specific to your workplace and to prevent occupational diseases and accidents. BHT company does not treat occupational illnesses or the consequences of a poor working environment, even though we have doctors working for us.

Under Norwegian law, A BHT company must be recognised by the Labour Inspectorate (Arbeidstilsynet) and provides services to a range of businesses.

A business must draw up a contract with a BHT company and receive their services.

When is a contract with BHT mandatory?

The Norwegian Labour Inspectorate has laid down specific sectors where the risks to employees’ health are greater. All companies operating in these sectors must have a contract with a recognised occupational health and safety organisation. These include construction, cleaning services, restaurants, manufacturing and many others. A full list can be found on the Arbeidstilsynet website.

What are the actual benefits of BHT for a company?

• Risk assessment: BHT’s specialists help to identify risk factors in your working environment (e.g. noise, dust, chemicals, ergonomics) and draw up a prevention plan (part of the OHS plan).
• Health checks: Organises targeted health checks for staff in relation to specific occupational risk factors.
• Consultations: Provides advice on workplace adaptation, ergonomics and improving the psychosocial environment.
• Support within the HSE system: Helps to integrate preventive measures into the company’s overall HSE system.

In 2025, the Labour Inspectorate promises to pay particular attention to how companies actually make use of the services provided by occupational health and safety firms. Simply having a contract will not be enough – companies will need to demonstrate genuine cooperation.
